American talk show host Bill Maher shocked viewers after making a ‘tasteless’ joke linking Zayn Malik to terrorism.
Zayn’s fans have responded with the furious hash tag #RespectForZayn, after the talk show host joked about the ex 1D star’s whereabouts during the Boston Marathon bombings.
Maher was discussing Zayn’s sensational break frin One Direction when he said “I think after everything we’ve been through, I at least deserve the common respect of being told face to face [that you’d quit One Direction].
“Just tell me two things, Zayn. Which one in the band were you?
“And where were you during the Boston Marathon?”
He then showed a picture of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Cue gasps from the audience and a seething Twitter response. One fan wrote: "If terrorist means saving millions of lives then yeah. right, he sure is a terrorist."
Another fumed: "Zayn is an absolute angel. The behaviour of Bill Maher was utterly disgusting."
Speaking to The Sun, Liam Payne admitted: "We're gutted Zayn chose to leave.
"But now after a few performances as a four-piece, we feel confident and determined to carry on stronger than ever."
Zayn quit the group in the middle of the band’s world tour, which resumed last weekend without him.
His shock departure was swiftly followed by reports the group is on the verge of breaking up, but Louis Tomlinson, 24, blasted the rumours.
He said: "All four of us are 100 per cent committed to staying in One Direction."
Liam also took to Twitter to maintain the united front, adding: "I can see a lot of people thanking us for staying but your the real Heros (sic) here thanks for not thinking it's finished
